Cultivating a Sense of Place
RECENT PROJECTS
Hudson Valley Country Courtyard
A neglected courtyard redesigned for year-round interest. Winter-blooming witch hazel, followed by bulbs, spring perennials and long-lasting anise hyssop for the bees, butterfly weed and milkweed for Monarch butterflies. Goldfinches feast on the seedheads of blown coneflowers before beginning their annual migration. Arkansas bluestar flares yellow in the fall, and ornamental grasses carry through the winter.
Country House Patio
Confronted by a patio bed gone to weeds and a failing rock wall, the new owners of this upstate New York second home wanted vibrant perennial beds for entertaining on summer weekends. The drainage was corrected, the wall reset, and the main bed was reconnected to the bluestone surface of the patio with low-growing stonecrop sedums and a variety of summer bloomers including Russian sage, helenium, and scented anise hyssop.
Riverfront Porch
Original plantings had been unable to cope with an unrelenting southwest summer sun and winter winds blowing hard down the Hudson River. The client wanted a breezy yet slightly formal look, and for that, simple worked best. A sun-hungry panicle hydrangea in tree form and a shrubby black pine frame the planting, and the design is carried through with runs of short ornamental grasses, early-blooming hydrangeas in shrub form, and low-care roses. New England asters provide fresh autumn color. Hydrangea blooms, touched with shades of lime green as summer moves along, turn a light pink in autumn, before they are cut, dried, and used for holiday table arrangements.
